VYM has outperformed the S&P500 6.2% vs. 4.0% since the recommendation. This may be surprising to some considering the S&P500 has made a nice run to the upside. We believe, however, high yield is undervalued, and small caps will lead us out of this economic downturn. As the economy improves, high yield debt will become more attractive, and therefore increase in price. If we are wrong and the markets collapse, we believe we are in a better asset class than the S&P500.

The VYM buy price at the end of Wednesday 29, 2009 was 29.97. We use the end price to mimic a mutual fund trade. The S&P 500 closed at 873.64.

This blog is intended to help investors (401k participants) make tactical allocation changes within a diversified portfolio. It is intended to be used for 20% or less of an investor’s asset allocation. We will be attempting to outpace the S&P 500 by making aggressive tactical allocation changes. We will be using index funds that mimic indices, but investors can plug in their available options for each asset class we recommend. The next blog will be our first investment recommendation.
